Nematic liquid crystals are of special interest due to their role in display technology, and the discovery of new nematic ground states such as the twist-bend nematic is met with great enthusiasm. The uniaxial nematic phase is arguably the simplest liquid crystal phase, with the constituent molecules (or particles) being, on average, oriented along a vector termed the director. Much has been written about nematic liquid crystals and the twist-bend nematic phase, and so for the sake of brevity a short introduction to the topic suffices. The term “liquid crystal” refers to a large number of states of matter that possess some degree of positional and/or orientational order, which is intermediate between isotropic liquids and crystalline solids.
